Court Refuses Confirmation of Award, Agreeing with Expert Mauricio Gomm
Recently, the Southern District of New York refused the petition of Brazilian airline VRG to confirm an arbitration award. SILC professional Mauricio Gomm appeared as an expert on Brazilian law and practice, supporting the position of Matlin Patterson that the arbitration tribunal had no jurisdiction to tie it to the award. The ruling received coverage by Global Arbitration Review, which reported on the ruling on January 30.

Christiana Abbade do Couto contributes her unique skill set to SILC with an extensive background in corporate law and experience working with multiple legal systems.  She is a Foreign Associate with SILC, and she brings an additional dimension of important skills and expertise.

 

Ms. Couto is a Brazilian lawyer admitted by the São Paulo Bar Association to practice law in 2002. She has a specialized in corporate law (including the full process of opening a company in Brazil with all government authorities involved), analysis of transnational contracts and their negotiation (national and international, intellectual property license agreements, distribution, supply of products, importation of machines, render of services agreements, and others), and other issues related to international commerce. In addition, Ms. Couto has actively participated in coordinating “due diligence” projects during incorporation, merger and acquisition.

Ms. Couto's work experience includes several law firms and multinational companies. As an in-house lawyer in numerous multinational companies, she has provided general legal services to internal clients and managed external law firms in the matters that needed expertise in areas such as litigation (commercial, taxes, environmental and consumer), taxes, and environmental legislation. Ms. Couto has also worked with expatriates, managing the acquiring of proper visas for foreigners to work in Brazil.

Ms. Couto joined SILC in March 2010 as foreign associate.
